چکیده

This paper deals with the numerical simulation of flows of stratified fluids through channels with irregular geometry. Channel crosssections are supposed to be symmetric but not necessarily rectangular. The fluid is supposed to be composed of two shallow layers of immiscible fluids of constant densities, and the flow is assumed to be one-dimensional. Therefore, the equations to be solved are a coupled system composed of two Shallow Water models with source terms involving depth and breadth functions. Extensions of Roe’s Qscheme are proposed where a suitable treatment of the coupling and source terms is performed by adapting the techniques developed in [Vázquez-Cendón ME. Improved treatment of source terms in upwind schemes for the shallow water equations in channels with irregular geometry. J Comp Phys 1999;148:497–526; Garcı́a-Navarro P, Vázquez-Cendón ME. On numerical treatment of the source terms in the shallow water equations. Comput Fluids 2000;29(8):17–45; Castro MJ, Macı́as J, Parés C. A Q-Scheme for a class of systems of coupled conservation laws with source term. Application to a two-layer 1-D shallow water system. Math Model Numer An 2001;35(1):107–27]. Finally we apply the numerical scheme to the simulation of the flow through the Strait of Gibraltar. Real bathymetric and coast-line data are considered to include in the model the main features of the abrupt geometry of this natural strait connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. A steady state solution is obtained from lock-exchange initial conditions. This solution is then used as initial condition to simulate the main semidiurnal and diurnal tidal waves in the Strait of Gibraltar through the imposition of suitable boundary conditions obtained from observed tidal data. Comparisons between numerical results and observed data and some tests on friction sensitivity are also presented. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. and Civil-Comp Ltd. All rights reserved.

Programming CUDA-Based GPUs to Simulate Two-Layer Shallow Water Flows

The two-layer shallow water system is used as the numerical model to simulate several phenomena related to geophysical flows such as the steady exchange of two different water flows, as occurs in the Strait of Gibraltar, or the tsunamis generated by underwater landslides. The numerical solution of this model for realistic domains imposes great demands of computing power and modern Graphics Proc...

Evaluating the results of Hormuz strait wave simulations using WAVEWATCH-III and MIKE21-SW

In this study, the capabilities of WAWEWATCH-III and MIKE21-SW for predicting the characteristics ofwind-generated waves in Hormuz Strait are evaluated. The numerical models have been set up using Input data including GFS wind with 5° spatial resolution and 6 hours time intervals, along with the ETOPO1 bathymetry data with 2 arc-minute spatial resolutions. The results of the two model simulatio...

Atlantic forcing of the Mediterranean oligotrophy

26 The Mediterranean Sea shows a peculiar anomaly in its nutrient pattern compared to the 27 global ocean, as there is decrease in nutrient concentration from west to east. This 28 feature has been attributed to the anti-estuarine circulation at the Strait of Gibraltar, 29 where an eastward flow of Atlantic nutrient-poor surface waters is compensated by a 30 westward counter-current of Mediterr...

Ecological distribution of four co-occurring Mediterranean heath species

Erica australis, E. scoparia, E. arborea and Calluna 6ulgaris are the most abundant heath species on acid, sandstone-derived soils of the Strait of Gibraltar region (southern Spain and northern Morocco). Despite their apparently similar ecological requirements, these four species are somewhat ecologically segregated. Erica australis is abundant only on poor, shallow soils, with a high content i...
